- "In One New Message, the player makes dialogue choices when texting with others but sometimes the available responses are not ideal.
Rather than responding with their initial responses, they have the option to "check in with themselves" by taking a step back. This helps players realize when they are stressed out and that their first thoughts about responding might be self-destructive.
Recognizing and acknowledging their stress gives them some space to re-consider better ways to respond. And fortunately there are in-game activities that will help them to lower those stress levels. Players may choose to engage in one of the many coping strategies available to them in the game.
If they decide to use one of the coping strategies, the de-stressed player should find themselves in a much better position to respond constructively. And as a result, new dialogue options are now available. Real-world tips are included in the game."

The game mechanic uses in-game texting through which the game's character interacts with the various folks in their life. Through the game the player is exposed ot the protagonist's family life, school life, work life, and social life.
In all scenarios the player has texting options available to them but as the character becomes stressed the available options become problematic. The character is encouraged to engage in stress management to better respond."

One New Message was developed by Eloise Best and is the winning game from the 2022 Resilience Game Design Challenge from the Gaming Against Violence program presented by Jennifer Ann's Group, a nonprofit charity.
One New Message is an engaging visual novel with a distinctive style, relatable scenarios, and lo-fi beats.
In One New Message, players navigate the daily life of a student. As they do so they are challenged: to recognize when they are stressed-out; to apply various coping strategies to help them manage their stress; and to make better decisions once their stress levels have been reduced and they can respond more reasonably.
This game focuses on recognizing and fostering resilience by addressing coping strategies, self-awareness, and stress reduction. One New Message offers a free standards-aligned lesson plan.
