Commissioned by The Radboud University: The Chair “Augmentative and Alternative Communication” of Affiliate Professor Dr. L.J.M. van Balkom. The game is meant for children with a language delay, aged 9-11 years old but with a mental age of 5-6 years, i.e. starting literacy.
In the game, played on an iPad, the player can navigate with three types of vehicles through a colorful virtual world, while playing with letters and words. The set-up of the game offers many opportunities of language goals to integrate in the game – such as spelling and seeing words while hearing the pronunciation – but also trains other cognitive skills. The game is very free form; the player can float, fly and drive to wherever s/he wants. The different small tasks will pop up in all different areas.
The client, Radboud University, was very pleased with the result. Also the Kentalis Mariëlla school in St Michielsgestel, where World Transliteration Front (WTF) conducted several playtests, was satisfied. The client has plans for having the concept further developed by a professional game developer.
