The GapKids Adventure allows the player to select between a male or female player, dress them, and embark on a series of Saturday activities. Before heading out of the house, the GapKid must collect a series of items from the house that will allow access to later activities. Further, there are several clues scattered throughout the game that are obscured by red blocks. The game's sleeve includes a pair of red-tinted paper glasses to help decode these clues.
Activities in the game include skateboarding, rollerblading, and bicycling around various obstacle courses; negotiating a complex ladder maze in order to ascend to the tree house; a music mix station in the tree house; and video game system in the tree house that has 2 arcade-style games: a lunar lander-style game and a Pong game whose game field is obscured with the same red blocks used to hide clues throughout the game.
