GGTH-screen(1).jpg Hipsters! They seem to be everywhere nowadays. But when they’re not browsing thrift stores for vintage fedoras, riding their fixie bikes or looking for the latest album by “Alt-DL and the Wookies” (you wouldn’t have heard of them), where do they stay? Well, as manager of your own brand new Hipster hotel, that’s now up to you! In the Green Hipster Hotel, you can build your own vision of a perfect hipster habitat, a paradise for these skinny-jeaned settlers, by building, upgrading and managing your hotel while also staying good and green by learning practical lessons about energy, food and water waste.

The Green Hipster Hotel is a business management mobile game, designed for tablets and smartphones. The gameplay aims to provide players with a quirky, humorous and fun learning experience, where it is up to the player is to create a successful and environmentally-friendly hotel for a variety of hipster guests. To achieve this goal, the player has to build, manage and upgrade a range of bedrooms, bathrooms, restaurants and gardens in their hotel, as well as growing and managing resources (cash, water, energy), hiring and training staff, managing their menu and food ordering, and growing their hotel to improve its size, capacity and reputation. As well as building their hotel, players must also make sure that they run their hotel in as sustainable a way as possible in order to succeed in the game. Players begin with a limited amount of water and energy (until the hotel as a whole can be upgraded) at the start of the game, so they must minimize the amount of water & energy that rooms in the hotel use to keep expanding their hotel. This can be done through improving rooms with upgrades that reduce energy, water or food waste, such as energy-efficient lightbulbs or tap aerators, or through training hotel staff on how to reduce waste and improve sustainability.

The Green Hipster Hotel is the result of an EU-funded project: "Green Games in Tourism and Hospitality" (http://greengamesproject.com). The project aims to innovate and support improvements related to sustainability education in VET systems and practices in the tourism and hospitality sector. The project involved a major collaboration between a number of European partners, including the Department of Technology Enhanced Learning and the Clean Technology Centre from the Cork Institute of Technology (Ireland), Caped Koala Studios (United Kingdom), Prospektiker (Spain), Adelphi (Germany) and FH Joanneum (Austria).
